Industrial Commissioning Expands the Bitterfeld Biorefinery
The new installation adds a chemical production stage to Verbio's established Bitterfeld operations, where rapeseed methyl ester is already manufactured as biodiesel. Verbio describes the facility as the world's first large-scale ethenolysis plant based on this feedstock. The project also creates approximately 50 additional jobs at the site. By directing an existing raw material stream toward specialty chemicals, the company is extending its business beyond fuel markets. The commissioning represents an industrial milestone, while commercial production will develop through a staged ramp-up linked to customer qualification and application demand.
Selective Catalysts Enable the Ethenolysis Process
Ethenolysis, a specific form of olefin metathesis, provides the technological foundation for the project. Verbio reports that highly selective Schrock catalysts supplied by its subsidiary XiMo convert rapeseed methyl ester into functionalized molecules suitable for chemical manufacturing. According to the company, the reaction operates at comparatively mild temperatures and moderate pressure without solvents, supporting selective production and subsequent separation. The industrial installation translates a chemistry platform developed through years of research into large-scale processing. Its significance lies in producing defined chemical building blocks from an established renewable feedstock rather than relying solely on conventional fossil-derived routes.

1-Decene and 9-DAME Target Established Chemical Applications
The initial portfolio centers on 1-decene and 9-DAME, two building blocks with different downstream roles. Verbio identifies 1-decene as a feedstock for high-performance lubricants used in engines, gearboxes, and wind turbines. The company positions its bio-based version as a direct replacement for fossil-derived 1-decene. Meanwhile, 9-DAME, also known as methyl 9-decenoate, offers opportunities in cleaning products, lubricants, and polymers. These applications connect the new facility to existing chemical value chains. For purchasers, adoption will depend on matching product specifications and demonstrating consistent performance within their particular manufacturing processes and finished-product requirements.
European Rapeseed Supports a Broader Renewable Portfolio
Verbio's specialty chemicals strategy uses European rapeseed oil as the basis for regional chemical supply chains. Under the Verbio life chemicals brand, the company has outlined applications extending to coatings, adhesives, sealants, and other industrial materials. It has also identified 9-DAME as a starting material for downstream products such as 1-decanol, methyl decanoate, and C18 diacids. These developments indicate potential portfolio expansion beyond the first two building blocks. Verbio presents regional sourcing as a means of strengthening agricultural value creation and reducing supply-chain exposure, while actual environmental performance requires product-specific assessment.

Customer Qualification Will Guide Production Growth
Verbio expects output to increase progressively as customers qualify the chemical building blocks for their applications. The announced annual capacity of up to 60,000 tonnes therefore represents production potential rather than confirmed current output. The company reports enquiries from Europe, the Americas, and Asia, indicating interest across several markets. For industrial buyers, the next practical steps include evaluating specifications, processing compatibility, supply reliability, and commercial terms. The facility's longer-term contribution will depend on converting that interest into qualified applications and repeat demand, allowing renewable feedstocks to become established inputs in chemical manufacturing.
